Urban Bush Women Founder Featured in Kennedy Center "First Ladies of Dance"

This is a unique opportunity to witness five contemporary dance icons in an evening of solos. Representing three generations (1950s, 60s, 70s), these history-making women are masters of dance rooted in the African and African American culture and have inspired many with their strength, tenacity, grace, and determination.

A former dance partner of Alvin Ailey, actor and choreographer Carmen de LavalladeThe Creation, which was choreographed for her by her husband, Geoffrey Holder in 1972. Dance Magazine calls it "a saucy illustration of the Biblical take on how our world came to be and could make a believer out of Darwin."

Senegal's Germaine Acogny, founder of the critically acclaimed all-male Compagnie Jant-Bi and considered the "mother of contemporary African dance," brings an untitled work co-choreographed with Pierre Doussaint.

Founder of the 1970s-80s Harlem-based Sounds in Motion Co. and a Broadway choreographer, Dianne McIntyre performs her If You Don't Know, which draws on the memory of three mentors who she respects and wishes we knew better.

In Bebe Miller's Rain, a patch of live grass sits center stage, a set and silent partner to the red velvet–clad dancer. Miller describes it as a "work built by struggle, ultimately redeemed." She has been making dances for more than 25 years and created more than 40 original works in the U.S. and abroad.

Inspired by the plight of the displaced residents of New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina, Jawole Willa Jo Zollar created Bring ‘Em Home. The founder of Urban Bush Women and a former student of Dianne McIntyre, she and her company have been active in rebuilding the cultural life of that city.

Performance Timing: Approximately 90 minutes, with no intermission.

Leveraging Investments in Creativity, in collaboration with MIT’s Department of Urban Studies and Planning, and supported by a funding partnership of the MetLife Foundation and the Ford Foundation, announces an open call for entries to the 2010 MetLife Foundation Innovative Space Awards, a grant-making program of Space for Change: Building Community through Innovative Spaces.

ABOUT THE AWARDS

Launched in 2009, the MetLife Foundation Innovative Space Awards is a competitive national funding program that recognizes outstanding efforts in the design and development of affordable space for artists. The program emphasizes the benefits artist spaces yield for both artists and their communities. In the Awards’ concluding round of grantmaking leading artist spaces will be selected from across the country to receive unrestricted awards ranging from $10,000 - $50,000 along with access to technical assistance and a learning community of peer institutions.

HOW TO APPLY

ELIGIBILITY

Applications may be submitted by non-profit organizations, individual artists, public agencies, or a combination of the three, for artist space projects that:

Provide affordable space for artists to work, or to live and work
Are designed for multi-use or share space with a variety of tenants
Have been in place for a minimum of one year
Demonstrate a positive contribution (social, economic, cultural) to the community in which it exists
Promote ownership or significantly favorable lease terms for artists

Open Call for Arab American Artists

The Arab American National Museum in Dearborn, Michigan is calling on Arab American artists to create an original work based on the traiditional "Ahlan wa sahlan" (welcome) signs found in many Arab American homes. Contributed works may be added to the Living in America case in the museum's permanent gallery.

Artists can work in any safe and durable medium. The maximum dimensions of the work can be 70" (h) by 65" (w) by 5" (d). Submissions are due by December 20, 2009.

LINC Launches Space for Change: Building Communities Through Innovative Arts Spaces

Through a funding collaboration between the MetLife Foundation and Ford Foundation, LINC announces Space for Change: Building Communities Through Innovative Art Spaces.

The pursuit of artistic practices and the presentation of creative work often require unique spaces, and despite increasing public awareness of these needs, access to affordable spaces remains a key challenge for many artists. The urgency of this issue has galvanized leaders in art and culture, planning, and community development fields to recognize the impact of artist space development projects on communities. Research also points to positive physical, social, and economic impacts, including increased employment opportunities and improved youth development and arts programs for residents.

To highlight the production of artist spaces in an emerging framework of cultural equity, where artists are key stakeholders and contributors in community building and revitalization, the Space for Change program will begin by launching the MetLife Innovative Space Awards (ISA). In November 2009, up to five winning ISA projects will receive awards ranging from $10,000 to $50,000 to recognize and promote successful artist spaces that exhibit innovation, affordability, sustainability and positive community impact.

Additionally, the Ford Foundation Space for Change Predevelopment Grants will award grants to new projects in the early stages of planning that demonstrate the same commitment to creating affordable artist spaces. Guidelines for these grants will be made available in spring 2010.

First Peoples Fund honors Theresa Secord (MIBA) with 2009 Community Spirit Award

Theresa Secord, founder and Executive Director of the Maine Indian Basketmakers Alliance (MIBA), will be honored by the First Peoples Fund--a LINC Creative Community--as a recipient of their 2009 Community Spirit Award.

Ms. Secord is a 4th-generation Penobscot basketmaker and teacher. Under her leadership MIBA became one of LINC's ARTOGRAPHY grantees in 2005.
